Copper Basin High School alum Carder Lance is now pursuing a business degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with plans to one day take over his family’s construction company. Named salutatorian of his graduating class and recognized with numerous accolades, Carder’s academic success and career ambitions helped him earn the Blue Ridge Mountains Parade of Homes Scholarship, which has made continuing his education at one of the nation’s top universities possible.

Carder’s journey, however, has not been without challenges. At the end of his freshman year of high school, he began experiencing severe balance and equilibrium issues. After months of testing, doctors discovered a brain tumor. With the support of his family, friends, and his faith in Jesus Christ, Carder faced this diagnosis with courage and perseverance—strengths that continue to shape his outlook on life and his goals for the future.

As a fifth-generation member of a construction-based family rooted in Blue Ridge, Carder has been actively involved with his father’s company, Lance Contracting. The hands-on experience he’s gained fuels his long-term vision of running a successful construction business that contributes to the growth and thoughtful development of his hometown community.

Grateful for the support of the Parade of Homes Scholarship and the encouragement of those who’ve guided him, Carder is motivated to apply his education, carry on his family’s legacy, and inspire others through his story of resilience and determination.
