Learning from Those Who’ve Been There
As a new generation of students prepares to take the next step into their future, the path ahead can feel both exciting and uncertain. For those considering a career in the trades, there’s no better guidance than hearing from those who have already taken that first step. From hands-on experience to perseverance and passion, our Future of Our Trades Scholarship Alumni share the advice they wish they had when they were just starting out—offering insight into what it takes to build a meaningful and successful career.
Jack Hyatt
“Take every opportunity you can to get hands-on experience. It’s the only way to truly know if you’re capable of doing the work.” For Jack, real-world experience has been key. From working with local companies to pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, he’s learned that success comes from both doing and learning. “It’s never a bad idea to ask for help. People want to see you learn and succeed.” Through his faith, family, and job experiences, Jack has built a strong foundation—one that continues to guide him as he grows in his field. “The payoff is worth the work. Find something you enjoy—not just something that pays well.”
Landon Allen
“If plans change, don’t get discouraged—and if you have a question, ask.” Landon’s journey is a reminder that growth doesn’t always follow a straight line. With the support of strong mentors along the way, he learned the value of asking questions and staying open to change. “It will take time to figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life, so take your time—it’s not something you need to rush.”
Norma Solis
“Take every opportunity to learn hands-on in the field.” Norma emphasizes what so many in the trades come to realize—experience is everything. “Classroom learning is important, but it’s just the beginning.” With the support of scholarships and hands-on opportunities, she was able to focus fully on her education and pursue a career in construction with confidence. “Trades are essential and will always be in demand—it’s a stable and valuable career path.” To Norma, success means achieving her goal of becoming a project manager and doing work that leaves a lasting impact.
Miguel Salto
“Follow your heart, not just what you think will make you the most money.” Miguel’s perspective highlights the importance of passion in choosing a career path. Rather than focusing solely on outcomes, he encourages students to pursue what genuinely interests them. “There are more people willing to help than you think—you just have to ask.” Through a commitment to learning and leaning on others, Miguel has built his own path—proving that drive and curiosity can take you far. “Success means fulfilling your passions while helping others fulfill theirs.”
Samantha Rosas
“Stay humble and stay hungry for knowledge—there is always more to learn.” Samantha’s journey reflects the evolving nature of the trades and the many opportunities within them. From engineering to construction, she discovered that there are multiple paths to success—both in and out of the field. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Be your own biggest advocate.” Her experience in CTAE played a pivotal role, allowing her to explore different career paths and ultimately find the right fit. “Now is the perfect time to enter the trades—there’s a real need for skilled professionals.” To Samantha, success means becoming a reliable expert, contributing to her community, and opening doors for the next generation.
